Observed on the first Monday in September, Labor Day pays tribute to the contributions and achievements of American workers. It was created by the labor movement in the late 19th century and became a federal holiday in 1894. The holiday itself evolved over a period of years. 19th century America already had a tradition of rallying people in support of labor issues, normally through parades or picnics. Most historians agree that a parade of unions and massive picnic that took place in New York City on Sept. 5, 1882 was pivotal to the creation of the Labor Day holiday. The legalized celebration of Labor Day began as individual state celebrations. In 1887, New York, New Jersey and Colorado were among the first states to approve state legal holidays. Legislation was approved in 1894 to denote the first Monday in September as Labor Day.
